Workshop 5, Sydney, 2025: The Theatre of the Embodied Self (2 days)
Psychodrama initially emerged as a form of theatre that allowed Moreno to keep experimenting with the inherent human capacity for spontaneity. What changed was that he began to realise its therapeutic possibilities. Psychodrama continued to develop because Moreno understood that change would occur naturally through mobilising existing creative and relational processes fundamental to human nature. The crucial step Moreno made was in creating the therapeutic theatre was the use of a stage as an imaginary place where individuals could externalise their inner subjective world. Here, a new 'as-if' reality could be created where the normally separate worlds of an individual's external reality and their inner truth could come together and be explored from the inside. In almost every scene, a protagonist presents an aspect of themselves, what is important to them and the situation they face. The use of a theatrical setting demands that this self, as well as all aspects of the scene, are embodied so that it feels real. Because this work is important to the protagonist, they are invested in it and, consequently, change arises organically from their responses to what is displayed. It is not forced or contrived. More specifically, we might say that change and healing happens in the here and now through action-insight, spontaneity, and authentic encounter.
In this workshop we will explore the value and impact of action-insight, spontaneity, and authentic encounter in the psychodramatic process.
